The increasing costs of sickness absence and civil claims make it imperative for employers to obtain a specialist medical opinion concerning their employees' fitness for a given role.
Norwich Union offers various levels of pre-employment assessments to meet the needs of recruitment at all levels in companies, including low-cost questionnaires which are particularly applicable to circumstances of high staff turnover. The services will:
- Evaluate relevant aspects of a candidate's health to ensure an appropriate ‘match’ to the proposed work.
- Enable a ‘baseline’ of health status to be established at the start of employment, and complement future health surveillance programmes.
- Help manage future sickness absence and civil liability risk.
- Constitute a small percentage of recruitment/employment costs.
- Demonstrate a professional and proactive approach to recruitment.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety legislation.
Available as:
a) Postal Health Questionnaire, which is designed by experts and can be branded in the company name and/or;
b) Physical Assessment on site, via mobile assessments units or at approved medical centres conducted by Nurse and/or Physician
- Occupational Health Data-analysis and reporting
Norwich Union offers the best standards of reporting and analysis of the results of corporate occupational health surveillance and screening programmes. The results help to define and influence future health strategy and content as well as assisting with health risk management. Reports include:
Reports to Management
The results of health surveillance/screening are processed on our bespoke software.
All paper records are stored for future reference and confidentiality is assured.
On completion of an occupational health programme, Norwich Union provides a detailed report, which analyses results against previous programmes and available norms. Results are expressed in text and graph format, drawing attention to adverse trends, and highlighting any high risk aspects of the business. This enables companies to more accurately focus their Health and Safety resources.
Reports to Individuals
Individuals receive results at the time of their assessment and have the opportunity to discuss any health issues identified with a nurse.
In addition, a printed summary of the results is posted to their home address on completion of the programme.
- Stress Management and Counselling
Mental well-being is as important as physical fitness to enable an individual to perform optimally and remain healthy. Norwich Union provides access, at short notice, to the UK’s most comprehensive network of experienced Psychological Counselling and Stress Management Advisers. They advise and support your company on a collective and/or individual basis, covering issues from organisational change to post-traumatic stress, with the emphasis on solutions.
The services available include audit, consultancy and counselling on a one to one or group basis. Written reports may also be provided with appropriate recommendations.
- Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) assessments
Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) (Vibration White Finger) is a medical condition which affects the fingers and upper limbs. It can affect workers exposed to certain frequencies of vibration transmitted to the hand and arm, through regular use of tools such as jackhammers, saws and drills etc. It can cause blanching (white finger), numbness and/or tingling in the fingers. Other conditions such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome may be associated. Extreme cases are severely debilitating and may lead to reduced productivity, loss of income, litigation (by the employee) and prosecution (of the employer).
In the UK, nearly 800,000 people are estimated to have symptoms of Vibration White Finger, including approx 20,000 with advanced disability. Claims attract a high profile, which can result in bad publicity for the employer; settlements involving sums in excess of £100,000 have become a regular occurrence in recent years.
Norwich Union has a number of diagnostic tools to confirm or refute a possible diagnosis of HAVS including:
Paper questionnaires for large screening programmes to highlight which employees need to proceed to more sophisticated assessments noted below.
Paper questionnaires and clinical assessments performed by Occupational Health Nurses or Physicians.
Objective Testing – Norwich Union has two laboratories to assess employees’ responses to cold provocation, temperature and vibration, which facilitate more accurate diagnosis, grading and monitoring of HAVS.
